The Story
Step into 1918 with *Meadows of Stone*, a new musical inspired by true events and shaped by love, loss, resilience, and the unexpected connections formed during wartime. Written and performed by Amy Lee Newman and Jim Hodgkinson, with original music and lyrics by Hodgkinson, the story follows two Canadians who meet amid the upheaval of the First World War. Valance Maguire, a nurse, and Gabriel Arnott, a bandmaster, have each crossed the Atlantic searching for loved ones missing in action. Both are “of a certain age” and serving in a conflict they were not required to join. When their paths cross in France, a shared love of music draws them together, and Gabriel promises to help Valance search for her brother at the Front. Through camaraderie, laughter, music, and loss, the pair find themselves in an extraordinary chapter of life when they least expect it. The approximately two-hour performance offers an intimate afternoon of original musical theatre in the Shadbolt Centre’s Studio Theatre.
