The Experience
Canada Place is not just an architectural marvel with its iconic white sails; it offers a unique blend of culture, recreation, and stunning waterfront views. Hosting various events and activities year-round, visitors can enjoy strolls along the promenade, explore the Canadian Trail, or visit the Vancouver Convention Centre right next door. The panoramic vistas of the mountains and harbor create an unforgettable backdrop, making it a perfect spot for both relaxation and exploration.
Fun Facts
Built as the Canada Pavilion for Expo 86 β opened by Prince Charles and PM Brian Mulroney. The pavilion hosted over 5 million visitors.
The 'five sails' are actually 27 individual sheets of PTFE (Teflon)-coated fiberglass stretched across steel cables on 40-foot steel masts, coated with titanium dioxide for UV protection.
In 2025, Canada Place welcomed 301 cruise ship visits and 1.2 million passengers. Each visit injects roughly $3 million into the local economy.
The Canadian Trail along the west promenade has 13 sections representing every province and territory through tiles, coloured glass bricks, and plaques β created with Parks Canada.
Canada Place has been the hub for Vancouver's Canada Day celebrations for over 37 years.
Christmas at Canada Place features 'Chrismoose' β a 15-foot tall moose light sculpture β plus the historic Woodward's Windows displays.
The sails are illuminated with programmable LED lighting ('Sails of Light') β nonprofits can apply to have them lit in their cause's colours.
Also co-named 'Komagata Maru Place' in recognition of the 1914 Komagata Maru incident.
